Images of the Month - June 2005
Mills of the Virginias

Hard to believe in this society where we are so disconnected from our food sources that only a couple hundred years ago the early European settlers built and operated facilities for milling their own grains on local creeks and streams. Because most of the extensive old-growth forests were yet to be clear-cut, they acted like a sponge, releasing water into the streams and creeks on a consistant basis year-round allowing the mills to operate in any season.

“Mabry Mill” - Virginia

“Glade Creek Grist Mill” - West Virginia

Thanks for looking! I post these images for two reasons: (1) for those who are interested in seeing my latest work and (2) because they are a great way for me to guage reaction. Due to the significant investment in printing images, I often hold off going into the darkroom until I get your reactions.
>>>> I would greatly appreciate your feedback - now.
