On the way to a show last summer, I spot this verdant field of sunflowers and am compelled to stop. While technically not a spring flower (blooming mid to late summer), the sunflower
is such a classic symbol of cheer and optimism I decided to feature it to chase away the chill of the long winter and cool spring. Aptly named, it is notable for turning to face the Sun, a behavior known as
heliotropism. In Greek Mythology, a girl named Clytie fell in love with the sun god Apollo, and would do nothing but watch his chariot move across the sky. After nine days, she was transformed into a sunflower.
