...bring May flowers

May 2006

On the way to a show last summer, I spot this verdant field of sunflowers and am compelled to stop. While technically not a spring flower (blooming mid to late summer), the sunflower is such a classic symbol of cheer and optimism I decided to feature it to chase away the chill of the long winter and cool spring. Aptly named, it is notable for turning to face the Sun, a behavior known as heliotropism. In Greek Mythology, a girl named Clytie fell in love with the sun god Apollo, and would do nothing but watch his chariot move across the sky. After nine days, she was transformed into a sunflower.

Thanks for looking! I post these images for two reasons: (1) for those who are interested in seeing my latest work and (2) I often hold off going into the darkroom to print an image until I get your reactions.
