Images of the Month - May 2004
The Presence of Man
For the most part, the desert Southwest is a harsh,
forbidding climate. Despite the odds, man has had
a presence here thruout the ages.

“Stone Age Men” - Grand Staircase Escalante, Utah
The first “men” of the Southwest.  Funny, kinda looks just like “modern” men -- standing around with their hands in their pockets :-)

“Spirit Fence” - Rockville, Utah
The essence of the Southwest replicated as originally depicted by Native Americans.

“Dune Shadow” - Death Valley, California
Shaking off my slumber at first light, I began setting up my tripod to capture these monumental dunes accented by the warm first rays of day when I noticed an incongruous speck at the crest of the highest dune -- someone had climbed the dunes in the dark (dune climbing, with the sand shifting beneath your boots, is not easy anytime) in order to take in the sunrise from the top. Eerily, I saw nor heard any sign of other human presence in the area - I know not from where he or she came - or went.

Thanks for looking! I post these images for two reasons: (1) for those who are interested in seeing my latest work and (2) because they are a great way for me to guage reaction. Due to the significant investment in printing images, I often hold off going into the darkroom until I get your reactions.
>>>> I would greatly appreciate your feedback - now.
