Ghostly Quiet

April 2006

The town of Bodie, California grew to over 10,000 inhabitants after gold was discovered here in 1859. After the mines played out in the early 1900’s, it was abandoned there no longer being any reason to stay in this harsh country. In these treeless hills at 8,400 feet, the summers are blazingly hot and the winters cold and blustery. The town is 13 miles of rough road off the main highway and usually only accessible by over snow conveyances in winter. The sign at the beginning of the road says "Road Closed, driving on a closed road may be a violation". Poor choice of words using “may be”-- it’s just not definitive enough for someone like me ;-) After a harrowing four wheel drive through alternating deep snow and sticky mud, I make it to within a mile and snowshoe in from there. I have the town to myself. It’s a cold but brilliantly sunny January day with not a breath of wind making for a ghostly quiet ghost town.

Thanks for looking! I post these images for two reasons: (1) for those who are interested in seeing my latest work and (2) I often hold off going into the darkroom to print an image until I get your reactions.
